When we talk about digital transformation, the excitement is usually around the new front-end – the sleek apps, the AI chatbots and similar. But frankly, my favourite part is the unglamorous, foundational work, the quality assurance/engineering and system resilience.

I recently worked on an exciting project with a leading multi-line insurer in the UAE (I cannot name them due to the NDA). They were facing a problem I see time and again with many clients – their legacy core systems had turned into a heavy anchor, dragging down everything else. They wanted to be client-centric and digitally advanced but their systems for Life, Health, Motor, Property and Commercial insurance were causing errors, slowing product launches and making it tough to meet regulatory demands, like integrating with UAE PASS.

Their Core Problem was The Legacy Bottleneck

I saw first-hand that the business wasn’t getting the speed or stability it needed. It was frustrating for the business heads. How do you stay competitive when your back-end is causing frequent errors and every release feels like a roll of the dice?

They had three pressing issues that, for me, were non-negotiable:

  1. Stop the production fires: The error rate was too high. We needed to ensure every customer journey, from policy issuance to claim payout, was rock solid.
  2. Hit regulatory milestones: Full compliance with UAE Central Bank directives wasn’t just nice to have. It was mandatory. We had to prove, beyond a shadow of a doubt that the new systems met every rule.
  3. Speed up reliably: Getting new products and updates to market was painfully slow. We needed to cut testing cycles without compromising quality.

My Solution was to Shift from “Testing” to “Strategic Engineering”

We didn’t just offer our client a testing team. We provided a strategic engineering managed service. I believe true quality engineering & assurance has to be domain-driven and risk-prioritised. We spent the time getting deep into their insurance workflows, the complexity of health claims, the speed required for motor policies and built our strategy around that:

  • We zeroed in on risk. Instead of wasting time on low-impact features, we focused our effort (and their budget) on validating the most critical, high-volume, and financially sensitive processes first.
  • We embedded compliance. Regulatory checks for the UAE Central Bank and mandatory integrations like UAE PASS were built directly into our test plans, not treated as an afterthought.
  • We created transparency. Through structured governance forums, we made sure the business, IT and even the leadership had clear, real-time visibility into the system’s quality status. This helped reduce decision latency by 40%! That’s a huge win in a fast-paced environment.

Here’s the Impact

The best part of my job is seeing the numbers validate the strategy. We didn’t just ‘pass’ their tests, we transformed their operational capacity.

Metric
Outcome
What this means for the business
Critical Defect Reduction 50% reduction Saved countless hours of unplanned rework and protected the client’s brand reputation.
Time to Market (TTM) 30% faster Gave them a serious competitive edge, allowing them to roll out new digital features 3 times more frequently each year.
Release Confidence 96% defect detection Enabled faster go-live decisions and reduced post-launch anxiety.

This project strengthened my core belief that in digital transformation, quality engineering & assurance is the engine of speed. By assuring the stability and compliance of the core, we empowered the entire organisation to be faster, more reliable and ultimately better at serving their customers.

What’s your biggest operational bottleneck right now? Is your QA strategy truly enabling speed or is it merely a check box?
